Interview

Tell us about your origins and how that influences your art

I'm from La Rioja, a beautiful area in the Noth of Spain with big wine culture. When I was still in college I moved to NYC and 5 years later to LA. Then, I'd say I'm a mix of those three cultures and for sure you can see brushstrokes of that influence in the style of my art.

Describe your aesthetic in one sentence:

I think I try to adapt myself depending on the project and the client. Probably, my aesthetic is a mix of different styles and influences (90's animation movies, comic books, the cities where I've lived.... to name a few.)

What is your background and how did you get into creating digital artwork?

I started animation in NYC (pretty much motion graphics), working on advertising agencies for digital campaigns. After 5 years there, I made the decision of moving to LA where I started working for the animation industry.

What things or subjects inspire your work?

I find inspiration in so many places. It's usually when I'm not even looking for inspiration that something pops up. Traveling is always a big one for me. Something about being in a totally new place changes the way I think.

Who are your influences?

Artbooks are a big influence on me. I love the storytelling of Disney and Pixar movies. Fine arts and pop art artists like Warhol or Linchestein.

Whom would your dream project be with?

I've always had a dream of making a Pixar movie or my own story as a short film.

What is your favorite program(s) to use for creating your work? Why?

I daily use Photoshop and Procreate sometimes Maya and After Effect if the project requests it.

Besides creating art, how do you spend your time?

I like biking with friends discovering new locations and natural routes. Watching movies is an obvious answer too as these days traveling is not an option.

What are you currently listening to or what music do you listen to while you are working?

My favorite music for working is Rumba-Pop (a Spanish style of music) and soundtracks from movies if it's a busy day and I need to relax.

Any tips or advice for people who want to learn animation or are just beginning their careers?

Basically, just work at it every day. Anyone can be an artist. It's more about constantly experimenting and learning than being gifted. But some more tangible advice would be to look at art all the time and save everything you love. Either make a mental note, save a Pinterest board, or even print it out and put it on the wall. After a while, you will have a very clear image of what your aesthetic is and you can revisit this whenever you get lost.
